A matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry technique is suitable for the analysis of macromolecular compounds including proteins, peptides and synthetic polymers. This technique is widely used to identify proteins and determine their amino acid sequences and post-translational modifications. Its advantage is the generation of high-resolution spectra and high accuracy in determining the mass-to-charge ratio.
